Hellers Etudes, Op. 45, first publisbed in 1844, were defined by the composer as « introductory to The Art of Phrasing ». Heller clearly states the problem of technique as one of sound quality rather than of mechanics and as a system of controlling no fewer than three tone colours at once. The edition is based on the first edition published and includes a preface, with historical introduction.
